The ocean around South Kihei is one of the most accessible and rewarding stretches of water in Hawaii. The sheltered waters of Mā'alaea Bay and the Alalākeiki Channel toward Kaho'olawe keep conditions calmer than the open Pacific, and the variety of marine life — sea turtles, reef fish, manta rays, humpback whales, dolphins — is exceptional. Everything from a $0 snorkel off Kama'ole III to a liveaboard diving expedition is within reach from P410.

Snorkeling
Maui's snorkeling is world-class — healthy coral, abundant marine life, warm water, and excellent visibility in the morning. Snorkel gear is easy to rent along South Kihei Road — Boss Frog and Snorkel Bob's are both nearby and will fit you properly.
The best snorkeling is almost always in the first hours after sunrise, before the trade winds build and chop the surface. Pick a calm spot, go early, and give your eyes time to adjust once you're underwater.

Kama'ole III
WALKING DISTANCEThe rocky south point is P410's go-to snorkel spot. Sea turtles, parrotfish, triggerfish, and the occasional moray eel. Best in calm morning conditions. Bring the boogie boards and chairs from the condo — but rent snorkel gear on South Kihei Road first.

P410 does not provide snorkel gear. Pick up a mask, snorkel, and fins from Boss Frog or Snorkel Bob's — both have shops along South Kihei Road. They'll fit you properly and explain what to look for.

Kayaking & Stand-Up Paddleboarding
The calm morning waters along the Kihei coast are perfect for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. From the water, Maui looks completely different — you're at sea level with the coast unfolding in front of you, and you get access to sea caves and coves unreachable from shore.
Sea turtle encounters from a kayak are magical — the turtles often approach and swim alongside. Always let them come to you and never touch them.
Guided kayak tours
Guided tours typically launch from Makena Landing or the Kihei boat ramp and explore Turtle Town. Snorkel stops included on most tours. Morning departures (7–8 AM) offer the best conditions and wildlife activity. Visit tour operator websites for current offerings.
Kayak & SUP rentals
Several outfitters in Kihei and Wailea rent kayaks and paddleboards by the hour or half-day. Look for rental shops along South Kihei Road — most offer guided tours as well as self-guided rentals. Book in advance during peak season.

Scuba Diving on Maui
Maui offers some of the finest scuba diving in Hawaii — from shallow reef dives accessible to beginners to advanced lava tube explorations. The south Maui coast (accessible from Makena) and the Molokini crater back wall are the standout dive destinations.
Molokini Back Wall
The outer back wall of Molokini crater drops to 300+ feet. Advanced divers encounter pelagic species — hammerheads, eagle rays, and open-ocean fish. A different experience entirely from the crater interior.
Makena Landing
A popular shore dive entry point with immediate access to a healthy reef, turtles, and the Five Caves lava arch system. Good for both beginners and experienced divers. 15 minutes south of P410.
First-time divers
Several operators offer intro (discover scuba) dives that require no certification — a trained divemaster accompanies you. A great option if you've been curious but never certified. Maui Dive Shop and Extended Horizons are well-regarded operators.

The iconic offshore crater is best reached by boat. Dozens of tours depart from Maalaea Harbor daily. Look for boats that limit group size for a better experience. Early morning boats (6:30–7 AM) have the best conditions and fewest people at the crater.

Stay Safe
Ocean safety on Maui
Read conditions daily
Maui's surf and wind conditions change quickly. Check the National Weather Service marine forecast each morning. If the lifeguard warnings are up, pay attention to them — they're not decorative.
Never snorkel alone
Always snorkel with at least one other person. Fatigue, strong current, or equipment failure can turn a calm snorkel into an emergency quickly. Stay together and check in on each other regularly.
Respect the current
Even calm-looking water can have a rip current near rocky points or channels. If you feel yourself being pulled, don't fight it — swim parallel to shore until clear of the current, then swim in. Never exhaust yourself fighting a rip.
Wildlife distance
Stay 100 yards from humpback whales — that distance is federal law. For sea turtles (10 feet) and Hawaiian monk seals (50 feet), the distances are NOAA guidance — but touching or harassing any of these animals is illegal under federal and state law. Let wildlife approach you — never chase or corner marine animals.
Reef-safe sunscreen
Hawaii law bans oxybenzone and octinoxate — the chemicals in most regular sunscreens that damage coral reefs. Bring reef-safe mineral sunscreen from home, or buy it in Kihei at Longs, Whole Foods, or Costco.
Hydration & sun
The ocean masks how much sun you're getting. Tropical UV at Maui's latitude is intense — much stronger than most visitors expect. Reapply sunscreen every 90 minutes, wear a rash guard if you're in the water for extended periods, and drink water throughout the day.
