South Kihei Is the Right Home Base
Kama'ole II — directly across South Kihei Road from the resort — is widely considered one of the most family-friendly beaches on Maui. Calm surf most of the year, soft sand, and lifeguards on duty. Kids can build sand castles and wade while you sit under an umbrella.
The resort pools are a three-minute walk from the unit — ideal for a morning swim before the beach or a wind-down after dinner. And the full kitchen means you can feed everyone without relying entirely on restaurants.
Beyond the immediate area, Maui has a remarkable range of family activities — from world-class marine life exhibits to gentle farm tours, ziplines, and rainy-day options that feel anything but like settling.

Kama'ole II
The middle Kama'ole beach and our recommendation for families. Wide, sandy, and generally calm — Kama'ole II has reliable conditions for young swimmers, and the beach is less crowded than Kama'ole I.

The largest of the three Kama'oles — a long stretch with a gentle slope. Good for boogie boarding when there's a small south swell. Ample parking, restrooms, and a playground. Reliable swimming conditions most of the year.

Kama'ole III
The snorkeling beach. Rocky points at both ends shelter a reef with sea turtles, parrotfish, and coral. Best for families with older kids who can snorkel. The wide lawns behind the sand are perfect for family gatherings — frisbee, a game of catch, or a picnic after the beach.

Keawakapu Beach
A long, uncrowded stretch of sand just north of Wailea. Keawakapu is quieter than the Kama'oles and feels a little less packaged — no resort looming over it, just clean water and good swimming. Great for a morning walk along the shore.

Makena (Big Beach)
One of Maui's most beautiful beaches — massive, undeveloped, and dramatic. Note: the waves here can be powerful and dumping. Best for older kids and adults who are confident swimmers and aware of shore break. On calm days it's magnificent.
20 min drive north · Ma'alaea
Ma'alaea Bay Beaches
The gentle, calm stretch of beach near Ma'alaea Harbor. Shallow and protected, it's as calm as Maui gets — excellent for very young children. Combine with a visit to the Maui Ocean Center right at the harbor for a perfect family day.

Maui Gold Pineapple Farm Tour
The Hali'imaile pineapple farm tour is a genuinely unique experience — we took it ourselves in June 2026. You walk the working fields, and kids (and adults) are surprised to learn that each pineapple plant produces exactly one fruit and takes about 18 months to grow. Tasting Maui Gold fresh off the field — sweeter, less acidic, completely unlike the supermarket version — is the part everyone remembers. The farm store sends you home with fresh pineapple, and it's a great stop on the way to or from Haleakalā.

Maui Tropical Plantation
A working farm and attraction in Central Maui. Take the tram tour through fields of pineapple, sugarcane, tropical flowers, and fruit trees. There's also a zipline through the plantation canopy, a farm market, and a good restaurant on-site. A genuinely pleasant half-day that teaches kids where their food comes from — and happens to be beautiful.

Surfing Goat Dairy
Kids go wild for this one. A working goat farm in Kula with tours that let you interact with the goats up close — feeding, petting, and watching the cheese-making process. The artisan goat cheese is exceptional. Easy to pair with the Maui Gold farm tour or the Ocean Distillery for a full Upcountry afternoon.

If you're visiting between December and April, a whale watching boat tour is one of the most unforgettable family experiences on Maui. Rainy Day Options
Kihei and South Maui are in the rain shadow of Haleakalā — they get less rain than almost anywhere else on the island. But rain happens, and sometimes it's a good excuse to explore Maui's indoor side.
Maui Ocean Center
The obvious anchor of any rainy day. Fully covered, endlessly engaging, and genuinely absorbing for all ages. Plan two to three hours.
Queen Ka'ahumanu Center
Kahului's main mall (275 W. Ka'ahumanu Ave) — mostly open-air, but covered. Good selection of Maui-based stores alongside nationals. There's also a farmers' market inside the mall on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, roughly 8 a.m.–4 p.m. — check the mall's website for current days and hours before you go.
Maui Tropical Plantation
The tram tour runs in light rain — and the plantation's covered restaurant and market give you a good base. A light Maui rain can be a surprisingly pleasant backdrop here.
Drive to Paia or Makawao
When it rains in Kihei it's often sunny on the North Shore. The artsy towns of Paia and Makawao are worth exploring for boutique shops, good food, and local character — a completely different side of Maui.
